Watson's Heart - Hard Talk

Here´s a totally new band for me. They really play well, singer got a good voice, nice backround harmonies. It´s not completely mainstream sound, it has that nice bit of funkiness in them. Somehow reminds me of early R.E.M. and partly of David Bowie. Guitar sound like it could be played by Brian May. I´d say this band has all the elements in place and could very well go far. Good song check it out here

Varied reviews

Hi all!

This time I really have varied pack of reviews for you! Acid jazz/latin of Montefiori Cocktail, singer-songwriter Tom McRae´s b-side collection and some hardcore techno thrown in by Angerfist. So it really is varied pack this time, but that´s the way I like it. As I always have said, it´s not up to styles, it´s up to music to end reviewed here. No Nrj/Mtv crap here.

let´s first goto Italy and meet Montefiori Cocktail. Montefiori is made up by Federico and Francesco Montefiori. This album is latin/acid jazz and has 21 tracks. Some tracks run less than minute, so that explains the numerous tracks. It´s one of those records not to be taken too seriously (band has made some bizarre covers for example of Star Wars theme), but is a good record to put on for a dinner or cocktail evening. Album flows well and is well produced. Almost all tracks are instrumentals and are good. If you like Senor Coconut And His Magic Orchestra you´ll most likely will like this one too. Also I´d recommend this for lovers of Bebel Gilberto. It has that easy listening vibe though and the intro tracks are pretty much useless. Overall I´d say it is enjoyable album for backround music. I liked it.

Theme from U.F.O.

I just love that cover, let´s start with that comment. This is self-released collection of b-sides and has 18 tracks on it. You can get this one from Tom McRae´s web site and I do recommend you to get this fast! You can well hear from the songs which albums they were released as b-sides and that is a good thing. It keeps this collection varied and doesn´t get boring. My favourites are the ones that remind Tom´s first album. Piano/guitar and cello work so well together with Tom´s voice and create something magical. The ones that are All Maps Welcome/King Of Cards time have more rocking attitude and are midtempo. Rest of the cd is slow stuff like the first album. Those songs that are All Maps time really stand out of the album, since they are so different from rest of the record. They are more radio-friendly songs than rest. I gotta say All Maps Welcome had it´s moment as well as King Of Cards, but they aren´t my fave albums. Alphabet Of Hurricanes was superb return album. Cd comes in a slipcase, so don´t expect artwork. If you like Tom´s music, get this one. It is essential purchase!

And them we go banging!

Here´s a album by a group that looks like they escaped Friday The 13th movie set with Jason´s hockey masks. That´s their trademark, hockey masks and black hoodies always when playing live. I saw them live at Mayday this year and it has to be one of the best gigs of all party! They really blew the roof off! Mutilate is double cd and it´s impossible to find anywhere (if anyone knows where to get it, please let me know!). It´s a damn fine album of modern hardcore. It really rocks well and eventhough being a double cd, it´s not too long album, like some are. Raw energy, check. Ideas, check. Melodies, check. Sounds are good and tracks are enough melodic to be accessible to wider audience. Mutilate has that flow and raw energy and tons of those. It´s a damn fine wholeness. This newer hardcore is much better than the old early 90´s hardcore which almost every time sounded the same. They are also responsible together with Outblast for one of my fave hardcore tracks Voice Of Mayhem. It just kicks ass!

Samples:

and bonus, Voice Of Mayhem

Time for the hard lady of hardcore, Korsakoff and her latest album Pink Noise! If you can´t stand mcs skip this album. If your answer is yes, give it a go. 15 tracks of good mainstream hardcre is served here. Some are bit formulaic, lasting around 5 minutes, but I´m not saying they are bad. I really liked this cd. Good tracks, good sounds and enough energy to start the party. Also includes melodies. Album also has anthem Unleash The Beast together with Outblast. Absolute killer here. Just right amount of tracks and if you liked Unrivalled, you will like this one too. Nice progression from Unrivalled, which is good album too. Only minus is that inlay could have been better.

Digital Voodoo

Outblast & Korsakoff Unleash The Beast (Angerfist remix)

Daydream

And some other stuff too. Flow festival has sold all 3 day and 2 day tickets out. There are some daytickets left for friday and sunday. If you want a ticket, be fast!

2.7. is busy day in Helsinki. If you´re in town, you got 2 parties going on outdoors. First there´s gay pride week´s parade and party in Kaisaniemi puisto with Pmmp. Other choice is bit harder edge of dance music of Distortion Outdoors. That takes place in Hesperia puisto starting at 13.

So lots of stuff going on next weekend for free. Also coming up in autumn is Säde 13 year anniversary party, which is something to look forward to. In Tampere there´s party by Kolina productions 16.7. at Mixei.

In Mäntyharju we have open-air festival 29.-31.7.2011 Choice of music is finnish hip hop/rap and varied electronic music. More of this can be found here.

Just in

Hi all!

Just in bad news for Duran Duran fans. The Helsinki show has been cancelled due illness of Simon LeBon. They are working on new date and tickets can be changed to that date or you can get a refund.

And to celebrate upcoming Tori gig, here´s my review of Tori´s limited edition dvd (Barns & Noble exclusive item) Live From The Artists Den. This has to be best concert dvd I´ve seen. The historical building itself is magical place to have concert and add Tori´s solo performance to that you get pure magic. She played less-played songs this time ( Ruby Through The Looking Glass, Ophelia, Maybe California) too and some old faves like China with piano and keyboard creating something familiar but still adding new spice to the song. Only sad point is that she didn´t speak with audience this time, but that might have ruined the atmosphere. Also included on this dvd is interview (bit over 10 min), Tour and history of the building, building the stage (worthless speeded-up) and info of Artists den series. The dvd is in beautiful book, which inclused historical drawings of the building, tori quotes and history of the Park Avenue Armory. The book itself is stunningly beautiful and this is really worth you hard-earned dollars.

Some reviews

Hi all!

Time to update the blog, now that the weather is bit cooler and looks like it might rain. There are still tickets available for Tori Amos concert and Prince concert. As for Prince it´s no wonder, since he has already 3 times cancelled his concert. Let´s see if he makes it with try number 4. My guess is there are too many big concerts and festivals around this summer, since for example Foo Fighters are coming to town. And time for some reviews...

Now here´s a good record, which is recommended. Regina has obiously matured as artist and it can be heard on this album. I think this is her easiest record to date. Soviet Kitch was pretty accessible as well as Begin To Hope, but this is still more so. Main instrument is as always piano and some strings thrown in for good measure, especially cello on Blue Lips is awesome addition. Songs are either slow or midtempo, which suits the album well as package. Some might find her vocals partly annoying her singing e-e-e-e on couple of tracks. Gone is Mary-Ann´s art pop luckily and back are good songs. There´s also deluxe version of the album available, which has a dvd.

Some clips

Far

Man Of A Thousand Faces

Blue Lips live

Next up is Funki Porcini´s Fast Asleep.

Here´s a album that isn´t easy to review. The album is a painting made of different sounds and layers. Of style, I think it would be downtempo. Fast asleep takes it influences from jazz and partly from Dj Shadow school. Album uses samples, which my guess would be, taken from movies. Mainly Fast Asleep is really laidback album, but there´s one track that sounds more of a track from horror movie. It´s not easiest album and might take few listenings to get, so be wary of this one. If you like Ninja Tune stuff, Dj Cam or Dj Shadow, most likely you will like this album. Also comparison to Herbaliser wouldn´t be off the mark. Especially basslines remind me of jazz, the way bass is played/sampled and melodies too. It´s bit odd cd and has tons of tracks. It is, like I said, bit of a painting made of sounds. A good journey, worth giving it a go. btw, Amazon.com has clips of all the tracks.

What Are You Looking At?

The Great Drive-By

The Big Sea

The legend is back! Mayday is truly legendary rave in Dortmund attracting crowds all over the world with 25000 people attending to it every year. I was one of the lucky bastards to make it there and what can I say? Best party I´ve been to. Soundsystem is loud and incredibly clear, lights flashy 5 different arenas, no queing anywhere. And fantastic atmosphere. So here we have the official compilation, there was no hymn this year though.

Spread on 3 cds and mixed, we have 20 tracks on each cd. Main focus here is bit more housier, electro tinged sounds on first two cds. I usually am not into electrohouse, but the cds were goo, no super, but good. Nice mixes, which flow nicely. The third cd also has Mayday classics mix, which has some legendary tracks like Jones&Stephenson´s First Rebirth. That one is true classic. most tracks are instrumental, so if you´re looking for us garage/vocal house this is not for you. If you like good, solid mix try this.

Some tracks from the mix:

Members Of Mayday Ravemobil

Kris Menace feat. Emil - Walking On The Moon (Adam Shaw Mix)

Jones & Stephenson The First Rebirth

And one more

As I always said, this blog concentrates music as whole, not in any particular genre. Here we have latest installment in State Of Trance Classics series, which is high-quality trance series. All versions are full-length and cds are unmixed, so it´s value for money. This is sadly most boring installment in the series. It still has good, melodic trance, but it doesn´t have those big classics, which previous ones had and they were also more varied. Here´s full-on trance, not much change in tracks. All are in similar, melodic style. So you either like it or loathe it. It is good compilation even with it´s faults and worth mentioning here. Artists include likes of Salt Tank, Brainbug, Oceanlab and Armin Van Buuren himself.

Oceanlab Beautiful Together

Union Jack Two Full Moons And A Trout (Caspar Pound remix)
Classic!!!!

Nu Nrg Freefall

That´s it for now, more stuff coming soon! News and reviews as I have time to listen to latest cds I´ve bought/borrowed from library:)

Have a sunny Week!

Some reviews

Hi all!

It´s another round of some reviews of cds I´ve listened to. And as always it is quite varied pack. And also some info of free concerts in the centre of Helsinki!

Let´s start off with a quite disappointment.

What can I say? I had previously heard Kiss presents Garage City collection mixed by Bobby and Steve and Dj Spen. This cd is worth seeking out for the Spen mix only. It´s one of the best soulful house mixes I´ve ever heard. Right up to the par of Masters At Work In The House etc. GC was released by Defected and has tracks such as Kings Of Tomorrow´s Finally, U.B.P. We Are One, negrocan Aquela Esquina and Kenny Bobien´s wonderful U Gave Me Love.

I really had big expectations for this cd and it didn´t deliver. I got no emotion out of this cd, just pumping tracks, some good but boring overall. The biggest problem with this cd is that all the tracks sound exactly the same. As for soul, I didn´t find it in this house at all. Tracks are good and well mixed, there´s no complaining in that, it´s just that it is boring to listen to since all the tracks sound the same. Cd has house and old disco well blended together, points for that. Cd has artists such as Sandy B, Linda Clifford, Mark Grant and Jovonn. Good artists indeed and 3cds well worth of your money, if you´re into 70´s disco and deep vocal house and don´t mind the song remaining the same. 2 cds are mixed, the 3rd one isn´t. This is their definition of soulful house, but I have to disagree.

Samples:

Mr V Feat Patty: Da Bump

Sandy B Feels Like Singing (Def Club Mix)

Melba Moore:Les Stand Together

Loni Clark: Rushing (Mood II Swing Dub)

The next stop is really hard to review... I don´t know what to think of this cd, but I kinda like it.

I guess this should be filed under humour music but somehow it doesn´t quite seem to fit this cd, eventhough you can´t take this record seriously. Please, don´t even try. Album 20 tracks long and some are just small clips more than tracks. All songs are short and that´s only a good thing. I guess I could say this is rock version of Weird Al Yankowich (hope I spelled that right). Instead of polka this has fake songs (Fake pixies song, fake Björk song, fake David Bowie song), which could also be seen as tribute to these artists, it´s up to listener to decide what to think of. Cd is overall really mixed bag going from rock to hillibilly speeded up country and to pop. There are some good tracks that can be taken bit more seriously, like United States Of Whatever, which can be seen as statement also. Also got give points for his diy attitude.

United States Of Whatever

Still Wasted From The Party Last Night

Fake David Bowie Song

Keeping things on pop side of things I have to reviews this next cd, eventhough it is bit old, but sill hey good music doesn´t look age. These cds are just perfect summer soundtracks.
I first noticed Lisa Hannigan when she was Damien Rice´s right hand woman. Her voice strucka chord with me and I was intrigued by her. Just listen to Nine Crimes (from album 9) to see what I mean. So here it is, her debut album. And it is gorgeous album! Critics said it was moderate, but I consider it to be smashing debut showing truly talented singer. The cd doesn´t have a bad song on it and is nicely varied to keep things interesting. Lisa´s beautiful voice, good melodies and warm atmosphere make this one of my choice of summer record. I just love Ocean AndA Rock, which opens the album and Lille is such a wonderful way to end the cd. If you like this, try Kate Havnevik. They have bit similar atmosphere, though Kate´s voice is stronger. I don´t know is good uplifting song with nice lyrics. Strong songs, beautiful voice and looks and good melodies. What is there not to like?

Lille

Ocean And A Rock

Keep It All

I Don´t know
live at pub

And more beautiful fragile music is on offer from our next artist

Mandalay is one of my all-time favourite artists. It has influences from trip-hop and pop blending them to something bit like A Man Called Adam. Really chilled, melodisc and woulnerable. This is really sweet, strong on melodies (I know, I´m repeating myself) and singer has such a frail voice. Sends shivers down my spine. Band has now released 4 albums after they first broke up after 3 and reunited for a new album. The first 3 I have and the review will consentrate on this album, Empathy.

Album hails from land of triphop but it´s not as dark as Portishead, so triphop isn´t correct label for this cd. I guess if I had to pigeonhole it somewhere, I´d say it´s more melodic, electronic pop with influence from triphop. Opening track, This Life, really grabs your attention with it´s beauty. Rest of the cd is same high quality luckily. This Life really rises expectations to high par that albums rarely reach. This one luckily does. One of their song, by the way, was in Next Best Thing soundtrack. Here´s another one of those perfect sundown cds. Ethereal, electronic, melodic are adjectives to describe this cd. I tried to think which artist would be in similar vein, but I honestly didn´t come up with anything. Maybe a bit of Smoke City´s Underwater Love or Massive Attack´s masterpiece Protection with it´s atmosphere. And other comparison would be Terry Callier´s Love Theme From Spartacus (Zero 7 remix). You decide and let me know how off the mark I was:)

This Life

Beautiful

Enough Love

reviews

Hi all!

It´s time for some reviews:) I finally had a chance to listen to Damien Rice´s B-Sides collection.

There are 2 different b-sides collections for reasons I don´t know. The other one has grey cover and has one track less than this one. There ain´t that many b-sides, but still the collection is good and pretty vast case. There are live versions of Woman Like A Man (unplugged), Delicate (also acoustic) and my all-time favourite Damien b-side The Professor & La Fille Danse. Those live tracks ain´t bad, but still there could have been more true b-sides. Also included is interesting version of Volcano (´97 rough walkman recording) and also instrumental version of the song. As for Cannonball radio mix, it is completely from another world than the original. Much more heavy on rhythm than original it gives a bit faulty image of the album. Moody Monday is good song. I honestly hoped for tracks such as Unplayed Piano, La Professor studio version but still a good collection for completist or for those who like to hear different versions of songs. If you don´t have O as yet, get the double cd version of it, which has the b-sides on it´s own cd. And points for cover being printed on recycled material! That always warms my heart!

La Professor live

Moody Monday

And next we Collapse Into Now

I honestly don´t know what to say of this album. I´m a long time R.E.M. fan and was waiting for something like old stuff. Ok, partly the album is going back to the roots and more rocking direction, which always works well with them. Some songs feel like they were outtakes from Automatic. Problem for me with the cd is that it´s running in all directions without knowing what it wants to be. That´s the feeling I got at first listen. And the album is loaded with guests, who mostly don´t bring anything to the tracks. I think most guests are just waste of time on this album. I feel gutted to be saying this honestly I wanted to fall in love with this cd. I really liked Around The Sun and Accelerate. I do like most songs, some are fillers, but not a bad album overall. Still be wary with it and listen to before buying.

Prince on tour in Europe

Prince is on tour in Europe! I had to update this here, eventhough I´m not keen on his music, but I do respect him as artist and multi-instrumentalist. Tour will include gigs in Rotterdam (tickets available for 9.7.2011 at Ahoy), Oslo 23.7. and 24.7. (tickets available). Believe it or not, there´s a show also in Helsinki (keep your fingers crossed)! Date is 21.7. and place Hartwall Arena. Tickets will go on sale 6th of this month and cost 135€.

For festivals, there´s Way Out West in Göteborg, which seems worth mentioning. That one is in august and more info is available here

There are tickets left for Tori Amos gig in Ice Hall costing at 49€ it´s pretty reasonable price.

Summer Sounds Special

Greetings from sunny and hot Finland!

I know that may sound weird, since we´re mainly known for cold winter and Santa Claus. But during summer it does get hot and now it´s very hot outside. No need for sauna then:)

This edition of Musil All Around is dedicated for summery sounds no matter of style. Got any suggestions, artists you think should be featured or are an artist and want a review here, drop me a line: tommi_b@hotmail.com all suggestions/comments are welcome!

Ironically off we go with Hed Kandi compilation Winter Chill.

Eventhough it´s Winter Chill it definetly deserves a mentioning here. It´s exactly what you´re used to expect from Hed Kandi camp. Good quality tunes in full length, value for money and good selection. Right now I´m grooving to this cd and it is beautiful. Good melodies, good songs from artists such as Lamb, Nitin Sawhney, I Am Kloot, Husky Rescue (Go Finland!), Therese and Man Called Adam. Only housey tune on this cd is Kaskade´s gorgeous Let You Go. No wonder there´s such a hype of Kaskade, this is one of the best house tunes I´ve heard in ages. Put this cd in your stereo and go out and just chill. This is perfect soundtrack to it.

Samples:

Mooi - Sway absolutey gorgeous opener

A Man Called Adam - No Distance

Kaskade - Let You Go

Lamb - Hearts And Flowers

Elbow - Ribcage (Kinobe Mix)

Next one is one of my all-time favourite songs. When I djed I ended night with this one few times and it fitted perfectly. This track is essential soundtrack to sundown.

It´s just pure bliss that almost makes you cry. Terry Callier has amazing voice and here Zero 7 does amazing remix job. Rest of the mixes on this single ain´t as good (House mix by Roy Davis Jr etc.), but this makes the single essential. To me it captures the atmosphere of sundown completely. Imagine your self on the beach watching beautiful sundown over a blue water and this song playing in the backround. And for mr Callier, he ain´t a newcomer on music business, he´s been around for ages. One of his hits, No Ordinary Joe, is one classic folk song.

Terry Callier - Love Theme From Spartacus (Zero 7 Remix)

And some more summer tunes out of my box, Next we go bit housier direction. Ladies and gentelem I proudly present you Jerome Sydenham and oe Claussell: Espirito Du Tempo. Claussell and Sydenham is match made in heaven. Together they have released increbly soulful music on Joe´s Ibadan records, which specializes in all things soulful. To me this is modern soul music. It crosses borders between live instruments and dance music in a way rare records have done. It´s slow burner and takes off after almost half of the song. It´s just one of those special songs. Why should I convince you, decide yourself:)

Jerome Sydenham & Joe Claussess. Espirito Du Tempo

Now that we mentioned Joe Claussell, we have to go for this remix of his. Snowboy is mostly known for his rare groove/soul/funk outings and they are worth checking out if you like urban music or funk. This brit really knows his stuff and you can hear it in his music. But this remix is one that really blew me away. Full length version was released on Ubiquity records, a quality outlet for more rhythmic music (latin, jazz, funk, rare groove etc.). Clocking in total 11 minutes the siong builds towards the climax in an incredible way. If you´ve got the chance to get the full version, get it! Here´s only a 6 minutes clip to give you a taste of this track

Snowboy - Casa Forte (Joe Claussell´s Spiritual Life Samba Mix)

You know, as a Dj you have those records that never leave your box and never fail to bring a smile to your face and rock the crowd. I always played soulful house and here´s one gem from that genre. Crossing house with jazz and hint of latin ain´t nothing new and it can be done badly or well. Here´s an example of it been done well. I´m talking about band called Bah Samba. They have released several albums, which are pretty hard to find these days, but worth giving a shot. The first, self titled album is varied pack, having house, acoustic tracks in it. Magazines titled it coffee table album, which is part of the truth. Album might be a bit too varied for it´s own good indeed. This song is true gem from it. Let thins bring smile to your face: Reach Inside!

Bah Samba - Reach Inside

There´sone Finnish song that sums up summer perfectly. All finns know this one, since it was big hit. I´m of course talking about Aknestik´s Suomirokkia. Band hails from Kemi, home of Jori Hulkkonen) and made a quite a mark on scene here before breaking up. Band´s vocalist Jukka Takalo has after break up continued on a solo career. It´s pure radio-friendly pop, but it just has that summer vibe to it.

Aknestik - Suomirokkia

there´s be still tons of summer songs I should feature from likes of Man Called Adam, Kerri Chandler, Lamb but I´ll feautre just 2 more for you, which I just have to.

First up is Koop

Waltz Foe Koop is second album by this Swedes and to me this is the album when they discovered themselves. The first one, Sons Of Koop, was more typical trip-hop and was bit half baked fare. With this album they really hit the spot and found their full potential. This is not your typical album but it´s perfect soundtrack to summer. Bowing to jazz and latin not forgetting quality vocals the album is just perfect soundtrack for terrace or picnic. This is one of the albums I keep going back to, since it´s feel-good summery cd. Latest album, Koop Island Blues, is darker and more melancholic record. First track from that cd, Koop Island Blues, has that same atmosphere that Aki Kaurismäki movies have. That stillness, sadness and blue feeling. And to top it off Ane Brun delivers vocals that fit the track perfectly. If you like singer-songwriter, she´s also worth checking out, eventhough I´m not a fan. I prefer Anna Ternheim. Summer sun features vocals by Yukimi Nagano, who later came member of Little Dragon.

Koop - I See Different You

Koop - Tonight

So here are some suggestions for those lazy days of summer. Next time new stuff, new artists and hopefully some news of Tori Amos cd. So far of Night Of The Huner is that there will be deluxe edition (already pre-order in Amazon.com) and regular cd (pre-order available at Play.com for 11,49€): So fat no info of the deluxe edition is available unfortunately, but most likely it will have a dvd as have previous deluxe versions. And as for Helsinki concert, they are trying to organize a meet for fans and members of Afterglow forum during at 13-16. More info of that coming as soon as I get some.
